Co-operators Insurance

Investment Analyst Co-op

**Role:** Investment Analyst Co-op **Period:** January 2025 to May 2025 **Tools:** Dataphile, OnBase, Fundserv, Excel, VBA

What I did

I sat on the investment operations desk, processing and analyzing 200+ mutual fund and securities transactions daily across Canadian and international portfolios. The work split into three areas: trade analysis, compliance, and a process improvement project that became the desk's standard operating procedure.

Trade analysis

Every day, transactions flowed through Dataphile, OnBase, and Fundserv. I evaluated trade execution quality and ensured alignment with T+2 settlement standards. This meant checking that trades were correctly allocated, properly settled, and reconciled against portfolio records.

Compliance reviews

Weekly, I reviewed 150+ securities transactions against KYC documentation, prospectus adherence, and IIROC regulatory standards. The job was to flag anomalies and surface anything that could represent portfolio-level risk exposure. When something looked off, I escalated with context, not just a flag.

Fund flow and sector analysis

I conducted fund flow, asset allocation, and sector exposure analysis across client portfolios. The output was advisor-facing research: mutual fund performance reviews, risk assessments, and rebalancing recommendations.

The VBA reconciliation model

The desk was running reconciliation manually. I designed a VBA-backed model that automated the tracking and comparison workflow. It reduced analysis turnaround time by 50% and improved accuracy of portfolio reporting. The team adopted it as their standard operating procedure.
